CHOW CHOW PORICHA KOOTU

A mildly spiced kootu with a dominant coconut flavor.It is very healthy too.Other than chayote, snake gourd, squash can also be used for this kootu. This can be either had as an accompaniment for sambar or just have with plain rice




Ingredients
Chow Chow: 1
Split yellow Moong dhal: 1/4 cup
Water: 2.5 cups
Turmeric powder: 1/8 tsp
Asafoetida: a pinch
Grated coconut: 2 tablespoon
Red Chilli powder: 1/4 tsp (optional)
Cumin seeds: 1 tsp
Green chilli: 1 (or as per taste)
Salt: 3/4 tsp

To Temper
Oil: 2 tsp
Mustard seeds: 1/2 tsp
Urad dhal: 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves: a sprig


Procedure:
  1. Peel the vegetable(chow chow) and remove the seeds
  2. Chop the vegetable into small cubes. The peel/skin of chayote can be used to make Chow Chow peel thuvayal
  3. Add the vegetable and moong dhal in a pressure cooker
  4. Add 2.5 cups of water, turmeric powder,chilli powder and asafoetida and pressure cook for 3 whistles
  5. Meanwhile grind together coconut, cumin seeds and green chillies with little water
  6. Add this to the cooked dhal and vegetable mixture with salt and cook for a minute
  7. Finally temper with 1 tsp of oil,mustard seeds and curry leaves.

Cook dhal and chow chow together



Grind coconut,cumin seeds and chilli


Mix with cooked dhal
