SUTTA VAZHAKAI PODI

This is yet another variety of a traditional dish made using smoked vegetables.I learnt this recipe from my mother in law.I have already posted a recipe for Vazhakkai Podimas but this recipe falls under podi varieties that can be served with oil/ghee This smoked vazhakkai podi is at its best when served with hot rice and ghee accompanied by pachadi.

Ingredients
Raw Banana: 1
Urad dhal: 2 tablespoon
Toor dhal: 1/2 tsp
Salt: 1/2 tsp
Red chili: 3
Asafoetida: pinch
Oil: 1 tsp

Procedure:

  1. Cook the raw banana in direct flame in stove. Rotate it so that it cooks well on all sides
  2. Roast until the peel turns completely black and allow this to cool
  3. Meanwhile heat 1 tsp of oil in a pan and fry urad dal and toor dal first
  4. Once it is half done add  the red chillies and fry until the dhal turns golden brown
  5. Add the asafeotida nd allow this cool
  6. Now peel the raw banana and cut it into cubes
  7. First grind the fried dhal and red chillies along with salt in the mixie.
  8. Then add the cubes raw banana and just pulse it for a few seconds
  9. Serve this podi with hot rice with a few drops of sesame oil
Notes:
Be cautious while smoking the raw bananas. It take more time than smoking eggplants
If you do not want to risk with smoking, cut the raw bananas into half and either steam cook or cook in microwave for 5 - 7 min
This does not have a good shelf life. Refrigerate if this needs to be used for the next day

Step By Step pictures
