MILK HALWA

I got this recipe from one of my cousins Mrs.Lakshmi.Though I haven't got a chance to taste her food, her culinary creations that she shared on FB made me drool. When I requested for the recipe she replied me promptly, well six months before and finally got a chance to try it now (Thanks to midwest weather which makes us almost house arrest during winter!). Though the recipe takes more than an hour to prepare, it is really worth it. But the good news is it takes little less time than the traditional Thirattipal/palkova recipe.

Milk Halwa

Ingredients
Milk: 4.5 cups
Lime juice: 1 tsp
Sugar: 1 cup
Oil: 1/4 cup
Ghee: 2 tablespoons
Rice flour: 2 tablespoons
Nuts: for garnishing (optional)

Procedure:

  • Boil milk and simmer until it reduces to 1/4 in quantity. Approximately this takes around 30 minutes
  • Now add the lime juice and stir for 10 - 15 minutes.
  • Add sugar and oil and stir continuously
  • Mix rice flour in milk (to avoid lumps) add add it the halwa
  • Stir continuously until the mixture thickens
  • Finally add ghee

Notes:

  • Instead of oil ghee can also be used
  • Do not reduce/increase the amount of rice flour
  • Always mix the rice flour with little warm milk to avoid lumps
  • Add the lime juice only after the milk reduces to 1/4 quantity.
